Although it is very uncommon for someone with multiple sclerosis to experience this, people who do suffer from this would need to take prior actions to prevent inhaling food or liquid. One way which is very effective is to use thickeners in drinks. By doing so, thickened liquids are much unlikely to be consumed through the wind pipe. Other methods to ensure a sufferer can swallow are by consuming smaller volumes of food or by performing oral motor exercises. Without the coordination of swallowing, food may become wedged in the throat and lead to spluttering, choking or coughing.
