Fαтιgυє:
Fatigue is the most restricting and confining symptom out of all the possible effects. It causes the body to feel tired as a result of damage to the nervous system. It appears in 80% of sufferers and may also cause the sufferer to lose their jobs due to tiredness. It interferes with their ability to function and limits many activities. Many other factors may influence fatigue in occurring which may include sleeping disturbances, bladder problems or breathing problems. Depression can also cause fatigue if sufferers do not eat or sleep well. The fatigue which may occur within ordinary people are obviously the same compared to the fatigue suffered from multiple sclerosis.
However, one type of fatigue which occurs due to multiple sclerosis is called“short-circuiting” fatigue. It is the result of demyelination in certain parts of the body and this is where weakness is experienced. For example, when a limb experiences weakness, this is because the myelin of the nerves in the limb has been affected. Although this type of fatigue can be overcome through regular resting, this may be a nuisance to sufferers when they require ongoing usage of the limb.
The unique type of fatigue only associated with multiple sclerosis is called lassitude. It is the result of poor transportation of impulses and is distinguished by devastating sleepiness. Since the myelin is destroyed during the course of the disease, the ability to transport impulses is affected and as a result, the body must work harder to send messages. The excess amount of energy used causes this unique kind of fatigue and occasionally occurs suddenly and increasingly.
