Spasticity is a form of stiffness experienced by approximately 20% of multiple sclerosis sufferers and occurs due to demyelination. It is caused by the myelin to be deteriorated in the brain and spinal cord which are responsible for movement. Also, since the impulses are either interrupted or slow, muscles may do three things to trigger spasticity. These are involuntary contractions, contracting for unnecessary periods of time and not relaxing when they should. All three cause stiffness to develop in various limbs. The stiffness may also transform into a form of pain when performing daily activities and it consumes unnecessary amounts of energy. It tends to occur mostly in the legs rather than the arms which are why spasticity is very limiting and confining in daily activities.
Paroxysmal symptoms are commonly known as spasms of the arm or leg which are usually mistaken for seizures. It is the result of demyelinated axons which are not able to transmit nerve signals. They are sudden and occur every few seconds or minutes. The effects of a paroxysm are the reason for why sufferers may experience difficulty in speech. It may affect the muscles of the mouth and sometimes, the muscles responsible for swallowing. These unpredictable spasms may be caused by hot baths, smoking or exercise. This symptom is one of the easiest to cure and can be achieved by consuming antiepilepsy drugs such as ‘Dilantin’ or ‘Tegretol’. Steroids may also help in extinguishing paroxysmal symptoms.
