During the course in the investigation of multiple sclerosis, it has been a concern for a period of time that viral and bacterial infections are recognised as a cause to multiple sclerosis. Exposure to viruses and bacteria throughout childhood of a sufferer may also influence the occurrence of this disease. This is because viruses are common to the cause of inflammation and the destruction of myelin thus triggering the effects of multiple sclerosis. Many types of viruses are being investigated to discover the exact cause of multiple sclerosis. However, the exact virus has not currently been identified.
One possible virus suspected to contribute to multiple sclerosis is called the 'Epstein-Barr Virus'. New studies have shown that this virus affects the immune cells and causes them to damage the nerve cells. Epstein-Barr Virus hides away in the immune cells and releases unique molecules called 'RNA Molecules' which causes the immune system to damage nerve cell.
