During the course of multiple sclerosis, sufferer’s experience affected vision very often.Optic or retro bulbar neuritis is the term used to describe when the optic nerves in the eye suffered inflammation. Also, since the optic nerve is surrounded by much more myelin compared to other nerves and that is very closely associated with the brain, this makes the optic nerve invulnerable against demyelination. The optic nerve is surrounded by abundant amounts of myelin because the body is dependant on the eye for sight and observing the surroundings. Therefore, if any amounts of myelin are lost, vision would be heavily affected. Some affects to the vision may include ‘double vision’, seeing ‘black spots’,greying of vision, or temporary blindness of one eye. However, this symptom rarely results in total blindness and can last for days.
Sufferers may also suffer from involuntary eye movements also known as nystagmus which may include jerking or looking to the side.
