Interferon has its name derived from its ability to ‘interfere’ with viruses. Interferon-based treatments are effective in treating multiple sclerosis because interferon is a type of cytokine. Cytokines are part of the immune system’s hormones which regulate the immune system and help it fight off inflammatory conditions or viruses. By concluding from this fact, using interferon based treatments means that the immune system will be improved to an even greater level to prevent some possible relapses. ‘Beta Interferon’ is an example of an interferon and this type allows the immune system to calm down in order to manage immune responses. Other types of interferon include ‘Avonex’ or ‘Rebif’ which are drug names of the medications.
